Seagate IronWolf 10TB Hard Drive review
I would like to know which drive is the most reliable and robust. In terms of thermals, noise and power consumption more or less they should be the same.
Seagate did do well in the last quarter Backblaze Hard Drive Stats. If I have to guess, I would say WD Gold drives will last will last for the longest time than other two. These are datacenter drive where servers a pushed to the limits very minute. They are made for heavy use environments. Red Pro is a cheaper alternative for smaller business. They will not last as long if used exactly the same way as Gold would. Same with Ironwolf Pro.
They are made for speed and reliability but have rescue service added. You can also extend this rescue service for few more years. They will be cheaper and there will be rescue service available if needed. There is two kind of requests when choosing hard drives for the NAS. Some people need the cheapest possible hard drives whereas others prefer the most reliable hard drives. With cheapest ones, everyone understands that when that one year warranty runs out- drive can fail any time.
Basically, all hard drive classes can be used with Synology NAS, but we recommend choosing the right drive class to fit your needs:. Skip to content. Often the higher the MTBF, the lower the chance of failure. Note that there is no manufacturer of any hard drive that can absolutely guarantee zero failures.

This makes your hard drives warmer than usual. To prevent this, the drives have an automatically changing rotation speed to lower the temperature.
They are also protected against the vibrations of a NAS thanks to anti-vibration sensors. This ensures a lower power consumption and a good error correction. WD Red becomes less hot, though, and uses less power. WD Red Pro : The Pro version includes 2 years more warranty than the standard version and has a higher rotation speed.

What could the explanation be? Less disk platters could reduce the power consumption but it's hard understand that the 10 TB would also have less disk platters. Despite the larger capacity, Seagate actually managed to create a drive that draws less power than the smaller 8TB brother which is quite impressive. And those are the kind of operations that the drive is built for and will be used for. I just don't want to buy the STNE and they not work. The STNE is the current model on seagate website. I have suggested it for review.
Seagate claims that it promotes drive balance due to its rotational vibration sensors, RAID optimization using error recovery control, and advanced power management to save on energy costs.Seagate claims that it promotes drive balance due to its rotational vibration sensors, RAID optimization using error recovery control, and advanced power management to save on energy costs.
For our review, we will be looking at the 10TB model. Our enterprise hard drive benchmark process preconditions each drive-set into steady-state with the same workload the device will be tested with under a heavy load of 16 threads, with an outstanding queue of 16 per thread. Since hard drives reach their rated performance level very quickly, we only graph out the main sections of each test.
Our Enterprise Synthetic Workload Analysis includes four profiles based on real-world tasks. It ended with IOPS. Here, the Seagate drive posted an average latency of roughly Looking at maximum latency in our CIFS test showed unstable results across the board, though the Seagate IronWolf held strong as one of the better-performing drives, finishing with 3, As you can see below, both drives were the clear winners.
Results were much more unstable when looking at our iSCSI block-level test. Results told a similar story when configured in iSCSI. While the first part of the workload comparison focused on random-workload performance, our second half measures small- and large-block sequential transfer speeds.
In CIFS, all tested drives posted nearly identical results across the board. In our iSCSI block-level test, results were a little more scattered. Here, the Seagate IronWolf posted Sporting a 7. All of these elements allow it to excel in hour, 7-days-a-week operation. This service allows users to recover from unplanned disasters such as RAID controller failure, power surges and natural elements. However, CIFS performance was at the bottom of the leaderboard in those categories.
In our iSCSI block-level test, however, results were much more spread out. The Seagate IronWolf posted Discuss this review.

Only having the drive in use about 2 weeks as of this review, I can't say much about it's longevity, but so far it's performing as advertized. We have put it under as much of a load as we can, in both the NAS and server, with up to 6 users all accessing the drive at the same time.
It's easy to see we are not even coming close to maxing out the drives potential.Setinterval angular 7 example
My experience with the drive is on par with many of the other reviews giving it a solid 5-egg rating. The point is, it works, and it works as designed.
Overall Review: Overall, this seems like a great drive, and I would easily recommend it to anyone looking for high-capacity NAS solutions.
Overall Review: Seagate has always been good to me. I'm in the process of sending it for RMA with Seagate at the moment. Overall Review: Poor quality drives. I bought four an one has already died in less than 10 months of use in a home NAS. Dying that quickly with such a light workload is unimpressive. Would not invest in these again. Pros: Large capacity is the pro of these drives.
Have them in a freenas server system. Replaced one through Seagates program, given a refurbished drive. I also use two drives as hotspare and one spare as redundant drive. Thankfully i used hotspares other wise my data would be gone. These drives all have problems with bad read write sectors. For the money i spent should have paid a little more and got WD Drives reds.
Overall Review: I never go with seagate drives over the years, now years later after using these drives i know why. Overall Review: Would not recommended. Cons: Ordered 4 of these drives and 2 were DOA.
The two bad drives buzz every 5 seconds and don't spin up. Getting two replacements but I don't have much faith with their track record right out of the gate. Overall Review: Bottom line - I do not recommend these drives. In this day and age there is no excuse for such poor QC. I'll go back to WD drives again. Overall Review: I have always bought WD drives and never experienced a problem but after reviews on Newegg and elsewhere decided to try Seagate.
Purchased two of these drive and had one DOA. Newegg RMA worked fine but the experience left my project down for over a week.
